Description of Play
Luke believes in God. Adam believes in everything else. Next Fall is the story of a gay couple’s loving but turbulent five-year relationship in
Manhattan, portrayed with sharp humour and unflinching honesty. And when an accident changes everything, atheist Adam must lean on Luke’s family and friends for support…. and answers. The play is full of questions about faith, commitment, and unconditional love, forcing us to examine what it means to “believe” and what it might cost us not to.

Nominated in 2010 for the Tony (“Best Play”), Drama Desk (“Outstanding Play”) and Outer Critics Circle (“Outstanding New Broadway Play”) awards, Next Fall was named by New York Times’ theatre critic Ben Brantley as a Top 10 Show of 2009.

Casting Requirements

This is a NON-EQUITY production. All roles at Deep Cove Stage Society are volunteer positions.  Cast will be asked to join our membership ($10 fee)

ADAM, 45

A substitute teacher who is going through a mid-life crisis when he first meets Luke. Sarcastic, witty, charming, an atheist who tolerates
but cannot understand Luke’s Christian beliefs.

LUKE, 30

An aspiring actor, young, handsome and devoutly religious. Still in the closet with his family, he considers his homosexuality his “one big
sin.” Luke must appear to be 15-18 years younger than Adam.

HOLLY, 35

A bohemian candle shop owner and Adam’s best and long-suffering friend.

BRANDON, 30

A property developer and Luke’s former best friend. Also very religious and closeted. Has strong reservations about Luke’s current
relationship.

ARLENE, 50

Luke’s flamboyant, free-spirited, formerly drug-addicted mother. Divorced from Butch and estranged from Luke, she struggles with her role
as a mother.

BUTCH, 55
Luke’s hardline religious father, a successful southern conservative
businessman. He is homophobic, but deeply loves his children.
