Description of Play

Jonathan Hardcastle’s friend Samuel Hickory Wood has passed away, and he wants to leave 10,000 pounds to Samuel’s son Billy. Not knowing where Billy is, he has placed an ad in the paper to find him, but omits the proviso that no one can claim the money if Samuel has more than one child. Billy and his friend Charlie turn up to claim the inheritance, but are derailed when Billy’s twin, Rupert, also shows up. Things go even further awry when their triplet, Michael, arrives. Now Charlie must keep the assorted Hickory Woods concealed from Jonathan in order to sign the deal. But with Billy’s wife Winnie on the hunt for him, and Jonathan’s daughter Cynthia and his sister Amy and their suiters complicating matters, it’s a madhouse of slamming doors, secret drawers, and mistaken identities.

Casting Requirements

Billy/Rupert/Michael/Pierre Hickory Wood (20s – mid-30s, M, all played by the same actor)
The four identical sons of Samuel Hickory Wood. Billy is shy, none too bright, and from England’s North Country, a former employee of Jonathan Hardcastle. Rupert is posh and gets tongue-tied when agitated. Michael is an Irish rogue who wants to take everything for himself. Pierre is a mystery Frenchman. Actor must be fast on their feet and able to easily switch accents.

Charlie Barnet (30s – 45ish, M)
A middle-aged Cockney full of humour and guile, and the architect/manager of chaos as he tries to keep the deal from going south. Sees Billy as his meal ticket and Billy’s wife Winnie as an inconvenience.

Jugg (40s – early 70s, Open Gender)
The butler. Born lower-class but now considers themself an upper-class servant. Feels entitled to the finer things in life, especially since the boss is paying for them. Has a love for dog racing and for the cook.

Jonathan Hardcastle (50s – mid-60s, M)
A North Country mill owner. Irascible, crochety, and hard drinking, he does his best to hide his generosity while dodging his family’s attempts to preserve his health. Ready to marry off his sister and his daughter just to get some peace and quiet.

Amy Hardcastle (40s – 60s, F)
Jonathan’s sister and manager of the household. An Edwardian spinster and mother hen to her older brother Jonathan, while also smitten with Jonathan’s solicitor, Arnold Piper.

Cynthia Hardcastle (20s – 30s, F)
Jonathan’s daughter and the birthday girl. Full of life and fun, fancies herself an artist. Loves that hanging out with the artistic crowd irritates her father.

Winnie (20s – mid-30s, F)
